Form Development: The Splined Square

In an article made by Grovemade, a Portland based manufacturer of quality home goods, Lead Product Designer Sean Kelly outlined why they go through the trouble of creating a splined square instead of just rounding corners.

During this project, I had the opportunity to get repeated feedback from Sean to learn more about this idea and implement it into my design.

Solution

By creating a bedside table with a vertical wireless charging dock, the user can slide their phone in and “clock out” for the night. The height of the dock lets the phone peak out just enough to show the time, but not enough to distract you with notifications. A capacitive button on the side allows you to wake the phone at night to check the time without reaching for it.
